 We have an incurable malady: hoope.

 

Hope in liberation and independence,

 

우리는 희망이라는 불치병을 가지고 있습니다.

 

해방과 독립에의 열망 말입니다.

 

Hope in a normal life where we are neither heros nor victims.

 

Hope that our children will go safely to their schools.

 

Hope that a pregnant woman will give birth to a living baby.

 

at the hospital, and not a dead child in front of a military

 

checkpoint ; Hope that our poets will see the beauty of the color

 

red in roses rather than in blood; Hope that this land will take up

 

its original name : the land of love and peace.

 

영웅도 희생양도 아닌 정상적인 삶을 사는 희망 자식들이 안전하게 등교할 수 있기를 

 

바라는 희망, 임산부가 군 검문소 앞에서 죽은 아기를 낳는 것이 아니라 병원에서

 

살아있는 아기를 낳게 되기를 바라는 희망, 우리 시인들이 피가 아니라 장미에서 빨간색의

 

아름다움을 느끼게 될 날에 대한 희망, 이 땅이 사랑과 평화의 땅이라는 원래의 이름을 

 

되찾게 되기를 바라는 희망.

Background

 

1941년 팔레스타인에서 태어난 마흐무드 다르위시는 1948년 이스라엘의 공격으로 

 

가족과 함께 레바논으로 쫓겨난 뒤 평생을 조국 팔레스타인의 해방과 독립을

 

노래하는 민족 시인으로 살았다. 온통 저항과 투옥으로 점철된 유량의 삶 틈바구니

 

에서도 주옥같은 작품을 발표하며 노벨문학상 후보까지 오른 그는 1969년 아시아

 

아프리카 지역의 노벨상인 로터스상을 수상하고 지난 2008년 8월 9일 지병인 심장병으로

 

미국에서 숨을 거뒀다.
